<p>This is also known as <em><strong>Net Metering</strong></em>.</p>
<p>Net metering works in a Grid-connected system. </p>
<p>The way it works is that the solar array, (the panels,) are connected to the main power supply of the home. </p>
<p>Any surplus power is sold to the electricity company.</p>
<p>Power is only bought back from them when it is needed.</p>
<p>In a <strong>Stand-alone system</strong><em>, however, this is not possible. </p>
<p>In this type of system the usual choice for energy storage is the <strong>lead-acid battery</strong></em>. </p>

<p>The number and type of batteries that you will need will vary.  i.e. is dependent on the amount of energy storage needed.</p>
